BHEKO CELE VS GLYNNIS BREYTENBACH ON THABO BESTER’S ESCAPE
A video shared online on Friday, 14 April, of the Minister of Police Bheki Cele grilled by Glynnis Breytenbach the former prosecutor for the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa and a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Democratic Alliance over notorious convict Thabo Bester’s escape had netizens irked and questioning Cele’s competence.
According to EWN, Correctional Services confirmed that Thabo Bester had actually escaped from maximum-prison Mangaung Correctional Centre in March 2023.
Meanwhile, the fugitive had been living scot-free since his escape in May 2022 after he had been incarcerated for murder and two counts of rape.

Breytenbach found instant internet fame after grilling unbeloved Cele for the lack of accountability in Thabo Bester’s escape.
In the clip, the fiery blonde MP can be heard asking Cele,
“You didn’t inform the public of the escape because it was a Cash 22, [and] that it may have alerted Bester that you were on the lookout for him and you didn’t want to compromise the investigation?”
“Don’t you think that the public interest in this instance trumps the investigation of the police that was going absolutely nowhere until January?”
Breytenbach could also be heard addressing the rest of the house saying that every one of the state officials present had failed to do their job.
“It’s an absolute disgrace that victims of this man [Thabo Bester] were not warned, were not informed, were not protected. It’s an absolute disgrace, and you should hang your head (s) in shame—all of you.”
