KATLEGO BERENG DEAD
Katlego Bereng’s father, who’s been identified by News24 as Batho Mpho revealed on Twitter with the handle @BathoChief on Saturday, 22 April that he’s the father of the man allegedly burned by Thabo Bester.
“The body that was burnt by Thabo Bester in prison was that of my son. Our own government is failing us. I am broken”.
According to the publication, the deceased father Batho Mpholo received a call from his son’s mother, Monica Matsie that the DNA test results revealed that the burned body was that of their missing son.
Mpholo said he called his son’s mother in April 2022 asking where Katlego was because he wasn’t answering his calls or texts.
“He also all of a sudden just stopped posting on social media, and that I found very strange because he loved social media”.
The deceased lived with his grandmother and mother in Bloemfontein. Bereng’s mother is reportedly in a complete state of shock and isn’t able to talk yet: This is devastating news,”

THABO BESTER STAGED HIS DEATH
Katlego Bereng’s body was reportedly burned and used to stage Thabo Bester’s death in cell 35 at Mangaung Prison in May 2022. GroundUp reported in March 2023 that the body found in the cell was not Bester’s.
National police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed to News24 that the body had been identified and the family notified.
“As difficult as this news is, the SAPS is pleased to bring closure to the family,” Mathe added.
An autopsy report revealed that Bereng had died due to blunt force trauma to the head and was already dead before the prison caught fire.
His father Batho Mpholo says he’s flying down to Bloemfontein on Sunday, 23 April to be with the mother of his son Monica and the rest of the family.
Bereng’s mother Monica informed him that she asked to have DNA testing done as a body had been found, and police suspected it could be her son. The deceased, Katlego Bereng was turning 32 years old in May 2023.
