‘I DIDNT KNOW HE WAS IN PRISON’
Tshidi – who penned Prison Love in 2021 – shared how an abusive marriage led her to become prey to a manipulative prisoner.
The relationship began during a chance telephone conversation with a colleague’s brother, who expressed his interest in her. The man was convicted of armed robbery, but it took him weeks to finally disclose it.

Tshidi told eNCA: “We spoke every day; he became my breath of fresh air [but] I didnt know he was in prison.”
Two months after chatting day and night, Tshidi asked to meet the man.
She continued: “He takes a very deep breath and says that he would be able to because he is in prison.”
Tshidi reveals that she was more than willing to visit him instead. By then, she had already established an emotional connection with the man”.

Tshidi added: “He exceeded my expectations. He was handsome and looked like he had walked out of a magazine. It was love at first sight.”
‘ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE’
Like Thabo Bester’s escape from prison, Tshidi added that “all hell broke loose” after her partner left the correctional centre.
She continued: “I became a prisoner of love after he made it clear through his words and actions that he no longer needed me.
“I could have let go, but I insisted on holding on.”

Tshidi and her partner called it quits after years of dating.
IS SHE ANYTHING LIKE NANDIPHA?
Like Nandipha and herself, Tshidi claims that there are “thousands” of women in South Africa who date imprisoned offenders.
But Tshidi claims that she was not tempted to take the same route as Nandipha.

She continued: “I may have fallen in love with a prisoner, but I do not approve of criminal behaviour. He gave me what I was looking for emotionally….but committing crimes for him…No!
She added: “I didnt go looking for it”.
Tshidi also had a message for women who were once in her shoes.

She said: “When you are vulnerable, you don’t make sound decisions. Hence it is of vital importance as a person to work on yourself and know who you are and what you want out of life.
“Because if you don’t, others will give you definitions o who you are.”
